They scan when they leave and when they return!

For each time they use the pass that is one less extra credit point for the semester. Kids just go when they want to by putting the pass on my desk and leaving without disruption. I just mark an X on one of the five lines I have on the pass. This motivates kids to not leave the classroom since most want to save their extra credit points. It is amazing though how many kids will still ask to use the bathroom and then I ask for the pass and they say “never mind”. If I can tell there is an emergency type situation, a kid is endlessly coughing, a contact fell out etc then I just let them go without penalty. I have found this to be the most efficient and least disruptive policy I’ve used.

You do have a point there. I suppose you could just have the students draw an X on the board if they were signing out and erase it when they get back. I have sinks in my room, so I didn’t worry about that as much, but it could get pretty gross.

Hi Hope! Fantastic idea about the Google Docs! That would help keep the kids even more accountable. I might even be able to put one on our LMS and have the kids sign out on their own laptops. Thanks so much for your input and for reading! Cheers!

I’m going to try that I’m September when school starts up again. Have you thought of using google forms for the kids to sign out? I have a computer at the back of the class that has the sign out form already up. It’s nice bc it date and time stamps when they leave and when they come back. Thank you for this idea!
